Skyscanner had 100 million users and a clear ambition
Become the single app for everything travel - flights, hotels, car rental. The car rental module was the missing piece. An early version existed but wasn't performing - poor conversion, clunky navigation, and an interface that hadn't been designed for mobile-first users. Skyscanner needed a partner who could rebuild it to the standard the rest of the platform had set.
Miquido built the Car Rental module from scratch for iOS and Android - covering search, filtering, mapping and booking across 30,000 locations worldwide. The module was later integrated as one of three core pillars in Skyscanner's all-in-one travel app, attracting over 1 million new users and growing into one third of Skyscanner's business.

A 100-million-user platform with a car rental module that wasn't converting
01. An existing module that was losing users, not converting them
Skyscanner's first car rental app had the core problem of first-generation mobile products: an interface designed for desktop behaviour, slow performance, and navigation that frustrated rather than guided users. The commercial opportunity in car rental was real - but the product wasn't capturing it. Every user who landed on the module and left without booking was revenue Skyscanner wasn't earning.
02. Building a module that had to match the standard of a 100M-user platform
Skyscanner's flights product had set a high bar for speed, simplicity and reliability. The car rental module had to match that standard - not just functionally, but in terms of the user experience expectations that 100 million users already had. A module that felt like a different product would undermine trust in the platform as a whole.
03. Covering 30,000 locations without overwhelming the user
Car rental is inherently complex - hundreds of providers, dozens of filters, pricing that varies by location, time, fuel policy, mileage and flexibility. Building a search and filtering experience that made that complexity navigable - and that surfaced the right offer at the right moment - required deliberate product thinking, not just feature delivery.

Built for the moment a traveller needs a car
01. Full rebuild on current native frameworks
We rebuilt the module using Java for Android and Objective-C for iOS - moving away from the legacy codebase that had created the performance and UX problems in the first version. The decision to rebuild rather than iterate on the existing code was driven by the scale of the gap between what the module delivered and what the platform needed.
02. Mapping at the centre of the experience
We integrated Google Maps API on Android and MapKit on iOS - making location the primary organising principle for the rental search. Users could explore pickup locations visually, see nearby options, and initiate bookings directly from the map. For a product built around physical location - airports, cities, drop-off points - mapping wasn't a feature, it was the interface.
03. Search and filtering built for real decision-making
We built a search experience covering 30,000 locations with filters for fuel policy, mileage, provider rating, flexible booking, vehicle type and cleanliness. We also added a last-minute booking feature for users renting close to their travel date. The goal was to take the complexity of the car rental market and turn it into a fast, confident decision for the user.
04. Architecture designed for standalone and integrated use
The Car Rental module was built to work as a standalone product and as an embedded module within a larger platform - without rebuilding the core experience. When Skyscanner integrated it as one of three pillars in their all-in-one travel app, the architecture held.

01. 1 million new users attracted to the platform
The car rental module brought over 1 million new users into the Skyscanner ecosystem - users who came specifically for car rental and gained access to the full platform. For a product that started as a low-converting module, that number represents a complete reversal in trajectory.
02. Car rental grew into one third of Skyscanner's business
The module Miquido built was integrated as one of three pillars in Skyscanner's all-in-one travel app - alongside flights and hotels - and grew into one of the company's core revenue lines. A product that was underperforming became a business-defining channel.

The search and booking experience covers airports and cities across the globe - with filtering, mapping and last-minute booking working consistently across iOS and Android at a scale that matched the rest of Skyscanner's platform.
